YEAR-END OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND TO SUPPORT NEWCOMB

Sometimes the scariest thing about Halloween is that it portends the beginning of the holiday season. In a normal economy, thoughts would automatically go to plans for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s. In today’s economy, things are even scarier: Should we travel or stay home? Should I just make gifts or send cards to save money? Should I simply unplug the tree?

Nevertheless, despite being full of mixed messages and feelings, the holidays always seem to work their magic and turn our thoughts and hearts to giving to others, even though our giving might be less than we would like.

At TFoNC, we hope that your thoughts and hearts will include Saving Newcomb. As Thanksgiving approaches, we certainly can give thanks that Newcomb existed for 123 years, making a difference in many lives. As New Year’s approaches, we can look forward to renewal of Newcomb’s promise to provide an excellent education and a special experience to young women in the future. Thanks for what was and for what can be again with our support can be commemorated in special gifts in honor of Newcomb College’s past and future.

Here are some ideas: If you must withdraw funds from your IRA this year, you can direct the withdrawal to TFoNC, receive a deduction for the charitable contribution, and never take the money into your income. (Check with your financial advisor for details.) If you do not need holiday gifts from your friends and family, ask them to donate a tax-deductible gift to TFoNC in your honor. If you are curtailing your gift-giving out of consideration for others who may not be in a position to reciprocate, make a contribution to TFoNC and let them know that both of you have been recognized as donors to a special cause in honor of the holiday spirit. Another thoughtful gift is a set of note cards featuring “Newcomb Hall – The Dawning of a New Day.” The cards can be purchased on our website, www.newcomblives.com .

REMEMBER FOUNDER’S DAY ON NOVEMBER 9TH!

Mrs. Newcomb founded H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College for Women on November 9, 1886. On November 9th, take a moment to think about how amazing that was and what a difference she made.

FOCUS ON “NEWCOMB LIVES”

Readers of THE DAISYCHAIN know that “Newcomb Lives” is the name of TFoNC’s website (www.newcomblives.com). During the Bring Newcomb Home Reception in New Orleans last month, one of our supporters suggested that we also need to celebrate Newcomb

    LIVES

(rhymes with thrives!) – the lives of the special women who were shaped by Newcomb College as they made their marks on the world.

At THE DAISYCHAIN, we like this idea. What do you think? Send us your thoughts and suggestions of Newcomb lives to profile, women of today or yesterday, the women living all over the world, pursuing every imaginable career, making the most interesting families, homes and communities, and contributing of their time and talent. Please take a moment to do two things: Send us suggestions for alumnae to be featured in “Newcomb LIVES” and also send us news of your own life for inclusion in News and Notes. Send them to us at: info@newcomblives.com.

Help us collect and write the special stories of our lives.

We are drawn together by our common cause to Save Newcomb College and by the special experiences in life that we have enjoyed, in part, because of Newcomb. Let us celebrate the ending of one year and the beginning of another by sharing our stories with each other. What a gift this will be!
